My best friend
My best friend’s name is Tom Jones. Tom’s 43 years old and he’s a photographer. Tom’s wife’s name is Annie. Annie’s a secretary and she’s 39 years old. Their son’s name is Ben. He’s 18 and at university. Their daughter’s name is Hannah. She’s 15 and still at school.
possessive ’s
We use possessive ‘s to say that something or someone belongs to a person, is connected to a place, or to show the relationship between people. The possessive ‘s always comes after a noun. (See Unit 2)
Tom’s bicycle.
The shop’s customers.
London’s museums.
Mary’s brother.
When something belongs to more than one person and we give a list of names, we put ‘s on the last name.
Tom and Mary’s house.Tom’s and Mary’s house.
With regular plural nouns we use ‘ not ‘s.
They’re my parents’ friends.They’re my parent’s friends.
With irregular plural nouns we use ‘s.
They’re my children’s toys.They’re my childrens’ toys.
contraction ’s
We use ‘s as the short form of he is, she is, it is.
He is tall. > He’s tall.
She is happy. > She’s happy.
It is hot today. > It’s hot today.
