Day 2

cannot (irregular)

Although Thai is quite a logical language, there are some exceptions. Our first exception is in the way we say cannot for some actions.

There are a number of exceptions using dâi with some verbs. The following are from the vocabulary we have learned so far. Exceptions always use a pair of words.

verbliteral meaningcancannot
nawnlay downnawn làpnawn mâi làp
hĕnseemawng hĕnmawng mâi hĕn
khídthinkkhíd àwkkhíd mâi àwk

To understand the construction above we need to know the meaning of the new words:

làpsleep
mawnglook
àwkcome out, exit

If we look at the literal meaning of the expressions it will become easier to understand:

canliteral meaningactual meaning
nawn làplay down and sleepto sleep
mawng hĕnlook and seeto see
khíd àwkthink and come outto know the answer
cannotliteral meaningactual meaning
nawn mâi làplay down but not sleepcannot sleep
mawng mâi hĕnlook but no seecannot see
khíd mâi àwkthink but not come outdon’t know

We ask questions in a similar way:

hĕnkhăo mawng hĕn măi?mawng hĕnmawng mâi hĕn

You will come across more of these exceptions as you learn new vocabulary.
