In the previous lesson we saw how two verbs can work together in a sentence. ‘want to’ and ‘would like to’ are used in exactly the same way. They ‘help’ the verb that follows them.
dtâwng gaan
want to
Let’s look at some examples …
chăn dtâwng gaan bpai
I want to go
khun dtâwng gaan phûud
you want to speak
khăo dtâwng gaan hĕn
he wants to see
phŏm dtâwng gaan nâng
I want to sit
Jane dtâwng gaan àan
Jane wants to read
Peter dtâwng gaan maa
Peter wants to come
khăo dtâwng gaan wâai nám
he wants to swim
man dtâwng gaan bpai
it wants to go
dtâwng gaan and yàak jà are interchangeable. yàak jà is a little more polite, and you can say just yàak instead of yàak jà – it’s almost identical in meaning. Our examples will use both.
yàak (jà)
would like to
chăn yàak jà bpai
I would like to go
khun yàak hĕn
you would like to see
khăo yàak jà nâng
he would like to sit
ther yàak maa
she would like to come
Jane yàak jà gin pizza
Jane would like to eat pizza
Peter yàak dèuum beer
Peter would like to drink beer
Review the examples again in the videos, then try the exercise that includes everything you’ve learned so far.

If your answers differ a little because you used yàak instead of yàak jà, that’s ok. It’s all the same.
Hopefully you got the majority of them correct, so your understanding of basic sentence structure is good. Everything else we will learn is just added around this basic construction.
